Carbon Neutral
This website, like all those managed by myself, is run on a carbon neutral basis, with steps taken to reduce energy consumption, and deciduous tree planting commissioned to more than compensate for my works ‘carbon footprint’
The bottom line, Why do I work this way? Why do I charge less than most? How can I offer a quality, personal, service?
I believe that the quality of the service I offer speaks for itself.
The fact that most of the sites I have built for people have been commissioned following ‘word-of-mouth’ referral helps, I hope, to reinforce this.
I am a registered member of the UK Web Design Association (the Web Standards Organisation in the UK) I abide by their codes of conduct, and carry public liability insurance.
What I don’t do is make ‘big-bucks’ from my work (maybe I should – pass me the calculator someone!)
The largest and most complex websites that I run (www.pain-talk.org.uk for example) are run at my own expense, and as a public service.
However, few things in life are free, and it is to help cover the running costs of these public sites that I offer my services to others. I maintain a small client base, allowing me to cover the running costs of my own sites, and to develop these further.
This small client base allows me to maintain close links with those that use my service, I learnt to build websites because I enjoy doing so, not because I saw it as a way to get rich (I will, however, deny having ever written this statement if I do become as rich as Bill Gates)
Web design - my philosophy.
The world of the Internet and website design is a rapidly evolving beast. Almost daily users are bombarded with a host of new tools, 'plug-ins', viewers and utilities.
Clip art and animated graphics are available to excess (553,000 pages of clip art images were found on my most recent trawl of the web!)
In considering web site design, however, we must ask just what we really want.
The latest 'plug-ins' and utilities may produce spectacular results for some surfers, but face many, many, more with annoying messages such as "download WonderwebX V4.1 NOW"
Similarly clip art and animated graphics have their place, but can easily be overdone.
I can design a page that is as simple or as complex as required, but we must continue to ask ourselves what the purpose of that page is.
The messages and information on a page are key, pages that take too long to load, or have too many spinning, bouncing, dissolving, changing, messages, buttons or pictures will only serve to distract, discourage, or dissuade viewers.
