To calculate BMI enter weight (in kg) and height (in cm), then press calculate.

Results should be used as a guide only.

A desirable BMI is considered to be in the region of 20 to 25.

Above this is defined as 'overweight'.

A BMI over 30 is defined as 'obese'.

A waist circumference of more than 37 inches (94 cm) in men or 32 inches (80cm) in women may indicate an increased risk of heart disease or diabetes..

It should be noted that this method gives a rough guideline only as BMI tells us nothing about body composition or fat content.

Muscle is denser than fat, so some very lean muscular people could be classed as overweight, by this method.

If in doubt - look at the patient.
