Flight Prayers & Peace Cranes

Flight Prayers
Inspired by the paper prayers of Japanese worshippers at Shinto shrines.
These individual paper/fabric art squares hang freely on a frame of orange/scarlet wood in imitation of the Shinto tunnels of scarlet arches leading worshippers to the high point of the shrine, I chose to feature the folded crane in memory of Saduko, a twelve year old girl who died as a result of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
One side of each square has a rubbed star made from the various stages of folding an origami crane. Each reverse side has a star composed of the folded paper with hand written word messages/prayers.
Peace Cranes
On a visit to Hiroshima, I was inspired by the thousands of folded cranes sent by children from all over the world in memory of Saduko .
According to Japanese legend, completing the folding of a thousand cranes grants a wish.
Saduko started folding in hospital, but sadly never completed her task. Her school friends celebrated her courage by folding cranes too.
Children from all over the world still send folded cranes to Hiroshima in friendship.
People still keep encircling the earth with their messages of peace in her memory in the form of the folded crane.
These stainless steel woven fibre cranes stretch from ceiling to floor.
